The Basics of Baby Shower Etiquette
Attending the baby shower of a friend or a family member is a lot of fun! Baby showers are happy events which celebrate a new baby and they are usually held directly before or after the child is born. They are often hosted by a relative or a close friend of the mother-to-be.
However, if you have never attended a baby shower before you might be wondering what the appropriate etiquette is for this type of event. What should you bring and what can you expect when you get there? Here are a few important things that you should know before you attend your first baby shower:
When you are invited to a baby shower, it is polite to respond to the invitation and let the host know that you will be coming. They need to know how many people will be attending the party so that they can decide how much food and beverages they need to prepare.
Also, when you respond don’t forget to ask about whether or not you should bring a dish with you. Some baby showers will be catered, but other times you will be expected to bring some food along to contribute.
Don’t Bring Your Hubby
Traditionally, baby showers are an all-female event, expect for young children who might be accompanying their mothers. If you bring your significant other, you might be making the other guests uncomfortable who were expecting to be attending a womanly gathering. Also, many men will probably not enjoy sitting around with a group of women taking candidly about all of the intimate details of pregnancy!
On the same note, make sure that you check with the host whether or not it is acceptable to bring young children to the shower. Sometimes the host wants the baby shower to be an adult event where the guests can relax and not have to worry about taking care of kids running around. However, sometimes the baby shower can be a very child friendly atmosphere, so always check first.
Bring a Gift
When you are invited to a baby shower you should always bring a gift for the mother to be. You have many different choices when it comes to gifts, so give yourself lots of time to think of something special.
You could bring something practical, such as a baby monitor, car seat or baby clothing. You could also choose something for the mother, such as coupons for babysitting hours or a gift certificate for one month of maid service. Also, there are many websites out there which allow you to order personalized gifts such as teddy bears, picture frames, plaques and more engraved or embroidered with the baby’s name. These can make a very special and unique baby shower gift.
Offer to Help
Hosting a baby shower is a lot of work, so it doesn’t hurt to offer your host a little bit of help tidying up or serving food. They could likely use an extra hand to gather up the dishes after everyone has eaten or hand out the snacks.
If your host doesn’t need any help they will decline but they will appreciate you for offering anyway.
Follow Up With a Thank You
It is an honor to be invited to a baby shower, so make sure that your host and the mother-to-be know how much you appreciate being included. Send them a quick email to let them know that you had a very nice time and thank them for inviting you. Congratulate the mother again on her new bundle of joy and wish her lots of happiness.
These are just a few basic tips to remember whenever you are invited to a baby shower.
When attending a baby shower there are many etiquette pointers to keep in mind, such as bringing a personalized baby gift and always sending an RSVP in advance.
